·

Araku

Recently on my visit to Vishakapatnam, we cross the path to Araku Valley and this time we explore the coffee plantation area Briefly.

The lush green hills of Andhra Pradesh, the Araku and Anantagiri coffee plantations offer more than just a cup of coffee, they have a story of tradition, sustainability, and community resilience. So let’s explore it through our eyes.

Location

There are many coffee plantation areas in Araku Valley, but the one with proper maintenance and actually made for tourist site seeing is situated in the center of Araku Valley which is 15kms from Borra cave and 21kms from Araku.

It named as Wooden bridge Araku coffee plantation which is near the CBM Church, Sunkarimetta ( you can visit it too & thank me later ).

What made it special!!!!

Unique location and scenery:

It is situated in the most attractive road trip of India which attracts the bikers and road traveller because of its sceneric lush tall silver oak forest and here the tall ones are wrapped around by the cinnamon creeping plants, a well-known spice plant that climb trees using aerial roots.

The leaves are often deep green, glossy, and slightly curved, reflecting sunlight like polished jade.

The way these vines coil up the trunks gives an enchanted forest feel, making Araku Valley greenery look even more mystical and alive.

If you are lucky enough to visit the site or the valley in the early morning you would witness the mist rolls into the valley, these plants appear as shadowy silhouettes against the fog, creating a dreamlike atmosphere.

And the iconic Wooden man-made bridge from which the area gets its name serves as a picturesque landmark.

Through this Wooden track we explored the whole plantation area, its so magical and enchanting to walk around in between the tall oak trees above and coffee plantation area below.

Quality of Coffee

High-altitude conditions, and a unique balance of rainfall and sunshine all contributes to the rich flavor of its coffee beans.

The coffee produced here is known for its complex taste profile with hints of chocolate, citrus, and floral undertones. The taste depends on the type of coffee bean, the growing conditions, and the brewing method.

At the base of the hill locals sell coffee beans, coffee powder and many other spices which they produced in the valley.

Culture and historical significance:

History of coffee in Araku Valley traces back to the early 20th century, the British recognized the valley’s ideal climatic conditions, including its high altitude, rich volcanic soil, and cool temperatures—perfect for growing high-quality Arabica coffee. Now in Araku coffee plantations remained largely in the hands of local tribal communities.

The Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA) and other organizations began supporting tribal farmers by providing training in modern coffee cultivation while preserving organic and sustainable practices.

The government and non-profits encouraged shade-grown and pesticide-free coffee farming, which naturally suited the region’s dense forests.

Eco tourism and Experience:

The Wooden Bridge Coffee Plantation isn’t just about sipping coffee; it’s about experiencing its journey from tree to cup.

Here the activities include-

Nature Walks & Birdwatching – Explore the plantation’s rich biodiversity.

Beyond coffee:

what else to explore?

Borra cave– which is at a distance of 21kms from the plantation area.

CBM Baptist Church– which is near the checkpost, Sunkarimetta.

Galikonda view point– it is the second highest peak in Eastern Ghats, famous for its mesmerizing view of high reaching green mountains.

Katiki waterfalls.

Our experience

Even after our tiring journey from Vishakapatnam we took breathe at Galikonda view point, soaked its surreal beauty of longing lush green forest, mist cover hills. We enjoyed the view while having sweet corn and Kadi chicken which sold here by the local vendors.

We took photos, enjoyed the cool breeze and at that moment I was so overwhelmed with the sense of peace that Lord has given me everything He let me see, enjoy and breathe in his creation.

The hustle of daily life faded, replaced by nature’s serene embrace.

After that we headed towards the Wooden bridge Araku coffee plantation, which we heared that newly Wooden bridges were constructed to help you explore more closely to the plantation area.

With each step, the bridge heightened our senses. Below, the coffee plants stretched out in orderly rows, their glossy leaves shimmering under the sun and above the papanoramic view of the oak trees wrapped around with cinnamon plants, distant hills covered in mist creating a canvas of serene beauty.

Standing midway, we paused to absorb the serenity. The fusion of human craftsmanship with nature’s artistry evoked a profound sense of harmony. It was a moment for us, a reminder of the simple joys that lie in embracing the nature and most importantly we were doing it together.

Finally we could not resist to taste the coffee which they were selling at the entrance local shop.

The Araku and Anantagiri coffee plantations are much more than agricultural estates—they are living museums of sustainable practices, cultural heritage, and community empowerment.

CBM Baptist Church

We witnessed this beauty and embarked another milestones of our life. Than To thank the almighty we headed towards the CBM Baptist Church and it was another surreal experience to be under the shadow of the great wall of Lord which is near the checkpost, Sunkarimetta which is situated atop a hill in the Anantagiri region near Araku Valley.

It offered us a panoramic spectacle of misty mountains, lush green valleys, and a serene atmosphere in front of us that felt heavenly. Standing at CBM Baptist Church, gazing at the endless beauty of nature, we couldn’t help but felt a deep sense of completeness.

After this journey that stole our breath and filled our heart, we returned home in peaceful serenity.

The sights were mesmerizing, the moments unforgettable, and now, as we settle back, we carry the beauty of the experience within us, like a quiet echo of adventure and wonder.

Hope you get that too.
