Tirathgarh waterfall is one of the most beautiful multi-tier waterfall of Bastar which is formed from Munga Bahar river, it falls from a ht. of 300ft. in Tirathgarh; This Munga Bahar river is a tributary of kanger river. it is situated at a distance of 33 kms from Jagdalpur & from Raipur it is 336kms.

Tirathgarh waterfalls comes under the eco tourism venture of the state tourism department. The village Tirathgarh comes under Darba tehshil of Bastar district in Chhattisgarh.This Tirathgarh waterfall is one of the most magnificent waterfall of Bastar.
There is a small temple on a large rock opposite the Tirathgarh Waterfall and it is significant because it is located in an area with ruins of a 1,000-year-old Hindu civilization, it is said to be stabilised by Tirathraj.

How to reach?

  • From main city Jagdalpur it is at a distance of 33 kms which could be covered either by 2 wheeler or 4 wheeler.
  • From raipur you can either choose a roadtrip and cover a distance of 336kms while embracing the beauty of Chhattisgarh, its greenery, natural landscape ,palaces, waterfalls, tribal villages along its route & the famous keshkal ghati through road trip.
  • Or either come to Jagdalpur by air route. Jagdalpur is connected with two main cities of India: Hyderabad & Raipur.

Here, in Jagdalpur we stick to either two or four wheeler to reach the destination.
The route itself is of another level of magical journey as the road snakes through the ground, it alternates between dramatic hairpin bends and gentle curves, offering awe-inspiring vistas at every turn.


The forest by the side of the route is so alive with the sound of birds chirping.
Farther down the road before reaching the site a sparkling small river flows through the valley, reflecting the surrounding beauty in its crystal-clear waters [ colour changes with every season].

During the monsoon, the waterfall is at its most majestic, with a powerful current cascading down in full force with rage, draped in lush green foliage, the waterline come above the safety range. During monsoon it is advisable not to visit the site; as it might be life threatening.

In winter, the falls take on a more calmer view, with cooler waters and misty mornings adding an surreal charm. In summer, the reduced flow reveals the complicated entangled rock formations, telling the story of its geological history.

Best time to visit Tirathgarh ?

The best time to visit Tirathgarh would be November to February. It is the time when monsoon ends and the beautiful winter covers the valley with its cool atmosphere.
Jot Down: Tirathgarh waterfall during monsoon becomes furious & rage-full, it becomes very dangerous, the stairs go slippery, the water level rises up and it is a one way route only, thats all make it more dangerous on monsoon.

Uncovering the secrets: our experience

We have a beautiful memories of Tirathgarh, we spent a decade over in Bastar & it was always a go to place for any kind of celebrations for us.
Reaching Tirathgarh Waterfall was always an adventure in itself. A well-paved pathway with stone steps leads down to the base of the falls, offering breathtaking views at every turn.

Whenever we used to go we always carry extra pair of clothes because we knew we definitely going to walk into the plunge pool which is on the lower side of the second fall. [ Note: the site of main first fall where water collects has a sign of whirlpool, kindly see the sign carefully & avoid to enter].

As you walk down the stairs and go to the lowest part of the fall, also called as second fall of Tirathgarh which is of another height of 120-125ft.


The second fall makes the plunge pool at the base which is around 4-5ft deep. We used to swim and had natural pool party at the base of Tirathgarh. This would be all possible to experience only during late winter to summer.

There are small stalls near the entrance of the Tirathgarh where we used to enjoy Bhajiyas and bada with hot tea before heading towards the fall.


We used to pre-order the food [desi chicken, rice and dal fry ] for later, the reason behind was, Firstly we wanted to taste the Bastariya style food; Secondly it was so tiring and exhausting after having long fun while trekking and in plunge pool, we used to get hungered.
Without having food in Tirathgarh you can’t leave.

On every visit to Tirathgarh Waterfall it always offered us something new. The ever-changing interplay of weather, light, and water ensured us no two moments were the same. Whether we were watching the sunlight filter through the mist, feeling the cool spray on our face, or marveling at the surrounding flora, the beauty of Tirathgarh was always a living, breathing work of art for us.
Isn’t it similar to life!!!!

Things to Do

  • wear comfortable hiking shoes with good grip are essential.
  • Check the Weather, Avoid during rainy season as they make trails slippery & unsafe and overflowing water might block the path to return.
  • Don’t feed the monkeys as you might interfere with the natural habitat.
  • take good care of personal belonging specially food if you take any food with you at the site you might attack and encounter with various notorious monkeys. [ Be aware of them they might snatch the foods, bags from your hand].
  • wear sunscreen and apply insects repellent, also hydrate yourself well to stay refreshed.
  • Take breaks to soak in the beauty of nature.
  • Capture the moment through your lenses but also spend time enjoying it with your eyes.
  • Sit and enjoy the sound of the cascading water.
  • Go to the second waterfall site, If swimming is allowed, enjoy a dip in the pool near the second falls.
  • Bring extra pair of clothes [ in case you enter the water]
  • try local food at Tirathgarh, you can enjoy hot bhajiyas and bada with hot tea, also you can pre-order your food before walking towards the fall. [ The local made delicious desi Chicken & paneer chilli ]
  • Respect local cultures and believes.
  • Buy local souvenirs near the spot all are made by locals; they made of bamboos.

Things not to do

  • Don’t consume alcohol or any addictive or toxic substances near the waterfall and only visit the site with all sound senses.
  • Do not ignore posted signs or barriers; they are there for your safety. [Take it very seriously]
  • Avoid walking or climbing on rocks near the first waterfall as they can be slippery and dangerous and if you fall, you might directly enter into the whirlpool. [ Jot down: Nobody is recovered from that whirlpool]
  • Do not swim near the base if first waterfall or top of a waterfall.
  • Do not leave your trash behind or food waste [ pack all in the garbage back. Jot down: always carry trash bag whenever visiting the tourist places].
  • Stay at a safe distance to avoid being swept away by strong currents.
  • Never dive or jump into pools near waterfalls, as submerged rocks and unknown depths can be hazardous.
  • Avoid feeding or disturbing animals near the area.
  • Do not cross streams on the top side of the Tirathgarh waterfall strong currents might lead to fall from height.
  • Do not click photographers over the edge of any cliff.
  • Do not carve into rocks, trees, or structures, as it damages the environment.
  • Do not wonder without proper footwear, clothing, or without understanding of the path.

Things you should take with you while visiting the site:

  • Reusable water bottles: keep yourself hydrated to enjoy efficiently.
  • Snacks: which will give you instant sugar spike or have fruit for energy.
  • Quick-drying clothes or extra pair of clothes: In case you get wet [ Towel: For drying off].
  • Extra bags to carry wet clothes.
  • waterproof hiking shoes or sandals: For walking on slippery or rocky path.
  • Backpack: To carry your items comfortably.
  • Waterproof bag or ziplock bags: To protect electronics like your phone and camera.
  • Camera or phone: To capture the scenic views.
  • [ must have power banks with you ]
  • First aid kit: For minor injuries.
  • Insect repellent: To ward off mosquitoes and insects.
  • Moisturizer, Sunscreen and sunglasses: Even shaded areas can reflect UV rays.
  • Whistle: In case of emergencies.
  • Walking stick: For balance on uneven ground.
  • Blanket or mat: For picnics [ Jot down: Take pre-made foods to eat and enjoy, as in Tirathgarh there is so much rush & uneven spaces you can’t cook over there or you could simply enjoy the Bastariya food made by locals].
